🎤 The minute I dropped out, I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked far more interesting.

자퇴하는 순간 저는 관심없던 필수과목 수강을 멈추고 더 관심이 가는 강의들을 청강하기 시작했습니다.

 

🎤 It wasn't all romantic.

이것은 항상 낭만적이진 않았습니다.

🎤 I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friend's rooms.

I returned coke bottles for the 5 cents deposits to buy food with.

저는 기숙사 방이 없어서 친구네 바닥에서 자기도 했고,

한 병에 5센트인 코카콜라 빈병을 반납해 음식을 사기도 했습니다.

🎤 And I would walked 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple.

그리고 매주 일요일 저녁엔 맛있는 음식을 먹기 위해 시내를 지나 7마일을 걸어 Hare Krishna 사원에 가기도 했습니다.

 

🎤 I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiousity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on.

저는 그것을 좋아했습니다. 그리고 호기심과 직관을 따라 제가 (우연히) 수행했던 많은 것이 후에 아주 값진 것으로 나타났습니다.

 

🎤 Let me give you one example.

한 가지 예시를 들겠습니다.

 

🎤 Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country.

그 당시 Reed College는 아마 미국 최고의 서예 교육을 제공했던 것 같습니다.

 

🎤 Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer was beautifully hand calligraphed.

학교 곳곳에 모든 포스터, 서랍에 붙어있는 모든 라벨들은 아름다운 필체로 적혀있었습니다.

 

🎤 Because I had dropped out, and didn't have to take the normal classes I decided taking the calligraphy class to learn how to do this.

자퇴를 해서 정규 과목을 듣지 않아도 되기 때문에 저는 이 방법을 배우기 위해 서예 수업을 듣기로 결심했습니다.

 

🎤 (03:28) I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great.

저는 세리프 서체와 산세리프 서체를 배웠습니다. 서로 다른 문자 조합 사이의 자간을 변화시키는 것, 훌륭한 타이포그래피를 만드는 것을 배웠습니다.

 

🎤 It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture and I found it fascinating.

그것은 과학이 따라갈 수 없는 방식으로 아름답고, 역사적으로나 예술적으로 미묘함을 갖고있었습니다. 전 그것에 매료되었습니다.

 

🎤 None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life.

이 중 어느 것도 제 인생에서 실용화 될거라는 희망이 되지는 않았습니다.

 

🎤 But 10 years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me.

And we designed it all into the mac. It was first computer with beautiful typography.

하지만 10년 후, 우리가 매킨토시 컴퓨터를 처음 디자인할 때, 그것들은 고스란히 구현되어 나타났습니다.

우리는 그 모든 것들을 매킨토시를 디자인하는데 투입했습니다. 맥은 아름다운 타이포그래피를 가진 최초의 컴퓨터였습니다.
